The report “Fantastic Freshwater: 50 Landmark Species for Conservation” was published on May 22, 2022 in honor of World Biodiversity Day. This pamphlet is the result of collaboration of more than 70 scientists from the IUCN Commission's specialised species survival teams, who identify 50 freshwater animals, plants and fungi at very high risk of extinction.

Each of these species receives very little attention to conservation, especially compared to the attention given to many marine and terrestrial species. Many also act as "umbrella" species for a particular freshwater system or species group. Their conservation is likely to increase the protection of other species living in the same habitats.
