An article about taimen in Lebedinoe Lake (Iturup Island)
The Izvestia TINRO magazine published an article on the state of the Sakhalin taimen population in Lake Lebedinoye (Iturup Island). Habitat conditions and the role of the species in the ichthyocene of the reservoir are considered. Groundwater outlets make the temperature suitable for taimen, but insufficient for competitors of the species as are chars. Abundant overgrowth of the lake with higher vegetation in the summer prevents its "flowering." The lake has a good food base for taimen of different age groups - mysids and different species of fish (nine-spined stickleback Pungitius sinensis, japanese smelt Hypomesus nipponensis, juvenile dace Tribolodon hakonensis, pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbusha and chum O. keta). A negative factor is the proximity of the reservoir to the settlement Kurilsk, which means a high probability of poaching.
